MapProxy
The main strength of MapProxy is that it speeds up existing WMS servers. Unlike other solutions, the WMS standard remains on client and server-side. To make this possible, MapProxy uses the latest technologies.
Features of MapProxy:
- Speed
MapProxy actively improves the speed of existing WMS server. WMS services that are accelerated with MapProxy can provide maps up-to 10 to 100 times faster, depending on the existing infrastructure. Another advantage is that by adhering to WMS standards, all existing web and desktop GIS applications can be used and benefit from increased speed.
What speed increases can be achieved with the use of MapProxy is illustrated in the above chart. Three typical WMS from web geo-portals are compared with one accelerated WMS. MapProxy can answer up to 50 times more requests per second. Unlike conventional systems MapProxy is also easily scalable. Thus, the system can be arbitrarily extended. Regardless of whether a few dozen, hundreds or thousands of users need to access your maps, MapProxy is able to meet the most demanding requirements.
- Security
- MapProxy can combine individual map layers from different WMS services, meaning data can be published selectively. The actual WMS servers are not visible to the end user and can be secured by firewall systems.
- Infrastructure
- The integration of MapProxy is transparent. It acts as a middleman between the WMS clients and WMS servers. MapProxy allows you to upgrade the geospatial data infrastructure without requiring modifications to be made to the original servers. Different versions of the WMS servers can easily be standardized or updated. MapProxy supports all WMS versions (1.0.0, 1.1.1 and 1.3.0), regardless of the version of the original WMS server. All WMS requests can be transformed on-the-fly into any coordinate system, such as UTM, Gauss-Krüger or ETRS, without depending on the functionality of the original WMS.
- Additional benefit
- With MapProxy you can make your WMS server ready for the future. MapProxy creates tile map services (TMS) from your WMS server, which makes it possible to integrate the data into modern clients like OpenLayers and Google Maps. Our technology is as quick as Google Maps. MapProxy can also provide data for mobile applications and geo-consumer applications such as Google Earth.

Your benefits:
Acceptance
MapProxy reduces the loading time of your maps significantly. The interactivity of your map navigation will improve and the entire application will be more attractive to your users – a contribution to customer and employee satisfaction.
Cost
Previously, large investments were needed to scale existing systems for more users – for additional hardware and software, higher administrative costs for installation, maintenance, data management, etc. MapProxy makes these investments unnecessary. Without making changes to your infrastructure, the number of users as well as the speed can be increased. The transparent support of different versions and coordinate systems permits you to upgrade your infrastructure without interference.
New Technologies
MapProxy provides new technologies for the presentation of your geospatial data. You can offer your data in the KML format or via the TMS interface. This allows the use of modern clients such as Google Earth (KML), Google Maps or OpenLayers (TMS).
Applications
Open up new possibilities for your systems. Due to the high speed of the MapProxy you will be able to leverage your expensive spatial data. You can, for example, embed map applications directly to the home page of your website or make your spatial data available for mobile devices. These are new applications that were not possible with previous systems.
Distribution
MapProxy provides high speed and the ability to serve multiple users. Together with access logging and control, data can be selectively offered to third parties – you can distribute your own commercial geospatial data without having to upgrade your existing infrastructure.
How MapProxy is available?
MapProxy is an open source proxy for geospatial data. More Information are available on http://mapproxy.org. Omniscale is actively developed MapProxy. We support you on installation, configuration or implementing new features.
- MapProxy Hosting
-
With hosting we serve MapProxy on our own servers. With these servers, your WMS server will be enhanced. The hosting service is especially useful if your data is available on the internet and most users access your data from the internet.
Your benefits include:
- No investment in hardware and software
- No administrative expenses
- Usage-based fees
- Easy scalability of the system (number of requests)
- High-speed connectivity to European internet exchange points
